Unpacking the new Android 11 update

The latest version of the Android operating system, version 11, has been rolling out this week and depending upon your phone and carrier, you may have already received the update or it is soon on its way. With Android 11, you get even more security and privacy fixes sent to your phone from Google Play, the same way all your other apps update, so you get peace of mind. And your device stays armed with the most recent defense.

With Android 11, Voice Access is faster and easier to use. Intuitive labels on apps help you control and navigate your phone, all by speaking out loud. Even use Voice Access offline, for more support whenever you need it.

Many Android phone users engage with different messaging apps and Android 11 will move the messages with those you message most often in one place on your phone, prioritizing conversations from key people in your life. In addition, the Bubble feature allows you to respond to important conversations without having to switch back and forth between your messaging app and what you are working on. Also included in the update, users are now able to share what is happening on their phone with others via the built-in screen recording feature. This feature allows users to record with sound from their microphone, device, or both.

Android 11 has stepped up security for Android users offering onetime permissions allowing users to grant single use access to your most sensitive permissions: microphone, camera and location. The next time the app needs access to the sensors, it must ask the user for permission again.

If you haven’t used an app you installed on your device in a while, you may not want it to keep accessing your data. Android will now “auto-reset” permissions for your unused apps and notify you accordingly. You can always decide to re-grant the app permissions the next time you use the app.

With additional Google Play system update modules, they can send even more security and privacy fixes to your phone from Google Play, in the same way your apps update. So you’ll get these fixes as soon as they’re available, without having to wait for a full OS update.

For Android Enterprise users, Android 11 brings the privacy protections you get on a personally owned device to your company-owned device. The work profile gives your IT department tools to manage a device for monitoring your personal profile data or activity on your phone.
