New York, NY — Cigar Aficionado, the leading magazine for consumers who enjoy a good cigar, is mounting a major grassroots campaign to save the handmade cigar industry from extinction. Now under the FDA’s watch—which lumps them into cigarette and machine-made cigar classification—the artisanal cigar industry is shackled with untenable operational restrictions, many of which limit the introduction of new products. In order to comply with new FDA regulations, cigar companies are facing the prospect of hundreds of thousands of dollars each, which will be too burdensome to sustain.
“From cops, firefighters and military members to doctors, lawyers and policymakers, millions of Americans—from all types of personal and economic backgrounds—enjoy handmade cigars,” said Marvin R. Shanken, Editor & Publisher, Cigar Aficionado. “If left unchecked these new regulations will destroy the family owned handmade cigar industry, taking away jobs and pleasure from people. That is why we are asking our community to take action and ask FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb to rescind the regulations.” Shanken posted an open letter to Gottlieb, found here.
On the Cigar Aficionado website, the magazine is rallying consumers, cigarmakers, and retailers to write President Trump, Commissioner Gottlieb, and their Congressional Representatives.
“These new rules will leave fewer cigar choices in your humidor, changing the cigar industry forever, if nothing is done,” said David Savona, Executive Editor. “Now is the time to act to prevent any erosion of this artisanal industry that brings so much pleasure to Americans.”
A two-year study published in January by the New England Journal of Medicine, and partially funded by the FDA, found that the number of youths who smoke cigars was statistically insignificant. The two-year study examined the behavior of 45,000 people—including 13,650 young people—and found that the number of youths who smoke handmade cigars is less than one percent, underscoring the fact that handmade cigars are enjoyed by adults.
