Cigar Review: Montecristo Buena Fortuna

We are doing a series on cigars which are sold at deep discounts and so far, I do not mind saying, the few I have tried are horrible. If the remainder are like the first three I have sampled are any indication of the norm, then I would recommend NEVER buying these sticks at these discount online shops. I don’t use the word “cheap” often or lightly, but in these cases so far, these are cheap. Cheap in the literal sense of the word and cheap in the experience. You are cheating yourself of what would normally be a pleasurable experience of smoking a premium cigar.

Today, August 6, 2016, we start the series with a Montecristo Buena Fortuna which I smoked yesterday afternoon. The Fortuna comes in a bright yellow cover which slides off with some effort to reveal a very good looking dark, rich wrapper. The filler contents are a blend from Dominica, Nicaragua, and Peru. So far, so good. I knew something was wrong when I couldn’t get a good draw. I cut the tip as I normally would and couldn’t get much air, so I clipped it to the full gauge of the cigar with the same poor result. It actually took some effort just to inhale this thing. Not a good start.

I intentionally never check other reviews before smoking a cigar I plan to review and this time is no different. I did check some reviews today before doing my own and wonder what some people are talking about. We all agree the Buena Fortuna is not a good cigar; however, one is finding a taste of “coffee” and another “dark chocolate” and more. Not true in my cigar. My cigar had zero flavor.

My Buena Fortuna cigar had zero flavor, had a hard draw and tossed the thing 3/4 of the way through. I would have put it out earlier had I not been doing a review for this column. The Montecristo Buena Fortuna is a horrible cigar that is not worth the $1 you can buy it for at some of these deep discount shops online. Use that $1 to save up to buy a real cigar like an H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon or a Davidoff, etc. Don’t cheat yourself.

Now, I am going to need to schedule my reviews for some more of these deep discounted cigars and am not looking forward to it. But it’s best you are informed so you are not wasting your money.
