A new poll was out yesterday, July 13, 2016, by McClatchy-Marist showing some headwinds for both Democratic Party presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican Party presumptive nominee Donald Trump. Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party presumptive nominee Jill Stein are eating away at their leads by a combined 15 percent. Although the poll was released today, it was conducted July 5-9, 2016, so it is not reflective of yesterday’s announcement of Bernie Sanders’ compromise of his principles of endorsing Clinton. Future polls could benefit both Johnson and Stein as even though Sanders is trying to convince his supporters to move into the Clinton camp, it is highly likely they will not be able to swallow supporting someone like Clinton.
It is going to be an interesting summer indeed, as the nation moves toward more Libertarian principles (sound financial policy, gay marriage, privacy rights, marijuana legalization, etc.). This should give the Libertarian Party the highest showing for any of their previous presidential nominees to date. Although the same could be said for Stein’s candidacy in 2016, only Johnson, Trump and Clinton will be on the ballot in all 50 states, so most voters will likely focus on these three candidates. The corporate media should be as well; however, they so far have chosen to give Johnson only nominal coverage — though arguably the most coverage for any previous Libertarian Party presidential nominee.
