Florida Privacy Exemption Bill – Statement from Lauren Book

Statement from Lauren Book, M.S.Ed., CEO and founder of Lauren’s Kids, on proposed changes to Florida private recording laws to benefit child victims of sexual assault (HB 131: “Use of Intercepted Wire or Oral Communications as Evidence”):

“Following last week’s Florida Supreme Court ruling in McDade v. State, I vowed to work with the Florida Legislature to create an exemption to our state’s private recording laws for child sexual abuse cases. Today, I am proud to stand beside Rep. Jared Moskowitz as he files HB 131 to right this wrong for Florida’s most vulnerable: child victims of sexual violence. As a survivor and an advocate who hears the stories of thousands on my annual 1,500-mile Walk in My Shoes walk across the state, I understand the barriers children face when it comes to disclosing this intimate crime: shame, embarrassment, guilt, fear of not being believed…We need to do all that we can to help children find their voices and prove the guilt of individuals who have harmed them in this most predatory and deviant way, so we may continue to protect childhood in communities throughout the state of Florida. Cell phones and digital devices are revolutionizing the world in which we live, and it is time to empower children to use technology as a tool in their own safety.”
